importing contact records - doesn't map entire email address

WIN XP, Outlook 2003

I'm importing contacts from an Excel spreadsheet to a new contact folder.
The import goes well, all through mapping the fields. But when finished, the
new contact records show only the first character of each email address (I
can view the full address while mapping). Perhaps coincidentally...when
mapping, the very first record always shows the email address as,
name@company#com. Subsequent addresses do show correctly, (e-mail address removed).
