importing contacts via text file

i'm at a loss....

i have a customer who has a list of email addresses that she would like
to import into her outlook 2001 contacts. basically, we can get the
email addresses to show up as different contacts either by importing a
text file (which has E-Mail in the first line followed by one email
address per line) or through a CSV file saved in excel (same format).

however, if we then try to create a distribution list with these contacts,
nothing seems to show up. we click to create a new contact list. we
then click on the Address Book button and then choose the contacts in
the left column. finally, we click on the Add button and it adds an "e-
mail" for each contact (it doesn't list the email address...it just says "E-
mail." however, then nothing shows up in the New Distribution List
window except for a period.

opening each individual contact displays an email address. but, i can't
seem to send to these contacts either. i get an error saying something
about a transport server error (?).

the workaround is to copy and paste the email addresses (separated by
semicolons) from word into the box which appears after you click the
Address Book button when adding a distribution list.

does anyone have any other suggestions for importing these files?

thanks!
