Importing contacts

T

Tom W

I am trying to import contacts into Outlook 2007. I have tried importing
them using both CSV and Excel file types. No matter which file type I use,
Outlook crashes and the error simply states that Outlook has encountered a
problem and must close. I have reduced the number of contacts I am
attempting to import and that still hasn't corrected the problem. I even
selected a limited number of categories to import and it still crashed.
These are personal contacts that I had at my previous employer. I don't have
any other method of trying to import them.

In what format are they that you believe you need to import them?

I received them in an Excel format and I do not have the pst file. I was
not running Outlook on this computer previously, so I have no contacts in
Outlook.

Do any contacts get imported at all prior to the error being encountered or
is the issue "immediate"? Are there any addins installed related to contact
processing?

If you are simply getting the message indicated with no other errors
previously, the first step would be to run the Office Diagnostics to make
reduce the chances that there is a configuration problem with your Outlook
installation. If you have any 3rd party addins installed - disable or
uninstall them to see if the issue goes away.

If that doesn't resolve the problem, run ScanPST to eliminate any issues
with the PST file itself (assuming of course that you are trying to import
to a contact folder in a PST file).

Thanks for the reply, Karl. And I tried each of your suggestions. I
actually ran Office diagnostics yesterday and it found no problems. I
checked the add-ins and found one 3rd party add-in running and I disabled it.
Outlook still crashed when I tried to import the contacts. I then disabled
all add-ins and tried importing and it crashed yet again. I ran ScanPST and
it did repair some errors. However, upon trying to import again, same
result. If you have any other ideas I would be glad to try them. I am
trying to avoid having to manually enter 487 contacts.

If this were to happen to me, I'd start with fresh PST, make it the delivery
location, copy the data from the old PST (not using import/export, of
course), then import the csv file.

You didn't answer whether this was occurring immediately or sometime thru
the import process. If it's immediate, instinct would say there is something
wrong with the configuration. There is one problem with add-ins and that is
that just "disabling" it does not mean that it has not caused an issue
purely by the files that it originally installed/replaced (all depends on
the addin, it's age, and whether or not it acts on contacts and if so, all
contacts or just those in the default contact folder). Would also check to
see if the version of this addin is up-to-date for O'2007.

Brian's suggestion is certainly one that is valid but to simplify things -
would just create a new PST and import directly to it just to see if things
work as the first step. Then proceed to the full suggestion first. If you
can ultimately import to the new default folder as per Brian's suggestion -
than it evidently was a PST issue - else you still have a configuration
problem.

Alternatively, if you have another machine that is "clean" - see if
importing the same file works with no issues (my money would be that it
would be successful). If it was successful, completely un-install whatever
addin is present on the primary machine, run Office Diags to make sure all
relevant files are back to where things should be and try importing again.
Everything so far indicates a configuration issue since any time a "data
type" error is encountered, it typically results in an MAPI error and not
cause Outlook to shut down outright. On the other hand, a problem with a
single DLL could easily cause the problem you describe.
