Importing data into a custom field list

I have a large amount of data to enter into the value list for a project
level text custom field. How can I get this information from an Excel
spreadsheet into the value list?

Bad news. I think you are going to have to type those values into the value
list. Sorry.

Oh contraire! It is quite doable.

Start by creating a blank project, say, Project1.
Customize the Text1 field: Tools > Customize > Fields
In the Value List settings, select "Allow additional items to be entered
into the field," and check the box to "Append new entries to the value list."
Click OK, etc., to finish defining the field.

Insert the Text1 field into a view.
Switch over to Excel and copy the cells you want to use for your value list.
Paste them into the Text1 column of the Project1 plan.

Now, open Enterprise Global.
Tools > Customize > Enterprise Fields
Enterprise Text1
In the Value List settings, click the "Import Value List..." button.
Choose Project1 and Text1
Click OK.

Voila!

Brilliant! I hate to say "It can't be done" because someone out there will
always show me how it CAN be done. Thanks! :)

I know what you mean, Dale. Gary admonished me a month or so ago for saying
something couldn't be done, when it could.

It's easy to speak definitively when you know something is possible. But,
when we *think* something is not possible, yet we want to help someone, we
have to use weasel words -- "I don't think so," "As far as I know," "Probably
not," etc.

In the end, it all adds to the good of the discussion. Saying that
something can't be done is a great way to smoke out those who know how it can
be done. Plus, since you're generally the Ivory Snow (99 and 44/100 % pure)
of Project Server, it gives us "other guys" a shot at contributing
meaningfully to the knowledge base.

I hope Julie saw my solution before she set out to type in all those list
items! Too bad she didn't include her e-mail address in her profile; I
wanted to catch her ASAP.

As I'm stepping through this I get to the part about importing to the
Enterprise Global. I get a message about needing to allow additional items
to be added to the list. However, this check box is grayed out and I cannot
uncheck the restricted box. Ideas?
