Importing database info to create a drawing

greetings wise ones...

in the course of my job I have to generate visio diagrams of LAN
topology and would like to automate part of this process by using the
visio import feature that allows you to bring in data from a database
/ spreadsheet and translate it into a diagram. Could anyone tell me
if this is possible, if it is, what info can be used, what formats
etc.. and how to set up this feature.

any help / advice would be fantastic

IMHO the work required to build a LAN drawing from a database/spreadsheet
would be more than just creating it manually (assumption is the user has no
previous experience with coding visio applications).
