Importing Excel 2k to Access 97

I have a problem importing as above. I can select the
option for Excel from Access 97 and then go off and find
the workbook but when the wizard appears it only shows the
following:

Sheet$1
Sheet$2
Sheet$3

I go ahead and select but there is no data in the access
files it creates sheet$1.mdb etc...

I need to use Access 2000.
Already tried saving Excel as 97 but same result as above

Any ideas?
