importing Excel File

I try to import an Excel file (made in Office Xp but saved in a lower
version) into Access 97 and it does not work.
This is the way I tried it:
I opened Access; I went to file/get exterenal data / import and then I'm
not able to select my Excel file because I can not select as filetype
Microsoft Excel (it is not on the list).

I also tried with ODBC-databases but no luck.

Can someone help me?? Thanks al lot.
