Importing Excel Files into Contacts

I am unable to import an excel file into my contact list.
I cannot get the Map Custom Fields dialog box to appear.
I have followed the instructions to name the fields in
excel prior to importing, but I then receive an error
message saying Outlook is unable to open the file for
import. I have researched the MS Help screens but have
not been able to resolve this problem. Please reply to
