Importing excel spreadsheets into Access

Having moved up from Access 97 to Access 2000, and more recently Access 2002
- I find I am unable to import data from Excel. In Access 2000, I am taken
through the whole import process, only to find nothing has happened. In
access 2002, the program merely crashes.
As a work around I import data into Access 97 and export the table into the
Access 2000/2 database.
Can anyone suggest what the problem maybe - repairing and re-installing have
proved unfruitful?
