importing field with numeric and text

I am trying to import a table that has a field that is historically numeric.
The issue is that they recently introduced alphanumeric values. ex was 01,02
etc now 01, 1w, 2z, 99
My problem is that it always tries to make the import as a double format and
access will not allow me to change the field type on import, it seems that I
used to be able to adjust the format type when importing

If this is a table in an Excel worksheet, try adding a dummy row at the
beginning, with a value that can only be interpreted as text. After
importing, delete the dummy row from the table.

As far as I know, no version of Access before 2007 has allowed you to
select field types when importing from Excel. It's always been possible
to control field types when importing from text files; sometimes it's
simpler to export from Excel to CSV format, and import that into Access.

the table is sometimes a text file as well. But what I dont understand is
why it is not using the format already in excel
