Importing Files through FP

Can someone tell me that advantage of importing files? Most of the time
when I add a new file to my website, I simply copy it to the web directory
where I want it to be. It is then uploaded when I publish. When I import
rather than copy, I don't see any differences. What am I missing?

As long as you are copying it into the "open" web
there is no difference.
