I have a series of three forms:

-An initial work reqeust

-A form capturing detailed results of that work request (research results,
technical specs, and committee recommendations).

-A forom capturing the summarized recommendations of the detailed work.

If I have some sort of unique identifying field on the first form, is it
possible to have that identifier automatically appear on the related second
and third forms?

Sounds like rather than having 3 forms that build on the same set of data
you should have 1 form that has multiple views.
Then as the form moves through your business process you show a different
view.

Hope this Helps

Thats what I've done in the past, but the person who I'm doing this for
wanted to know if there was anyway to have some sort of tracking number.
Thanks for your response.

Having a tracking number shouldn't be an issue then. The big question is
where does this tracking number come from e.g. is there a tracking number
standard internally that needs to be adhered to.
If there is no standard then there is no reason why you couldn't implement
your own tracking system either using a sql db or the values in a sharepoint
list

Hope this helps
