importing from Excel into Project

M

Marvin Brown

I'm attempting to import data from Excel 2003 into MS Project 2000.

I create a .csv file within excel.
The fields are issue id, client name, a description, a resource
percentage complete value, a finish date.

I then created a Project map and mapped the incoming fields to th
project fields.

What appears to happen is that Project does not create the proper star
date based on the finish date - duration logic. The start date appear
to be
current date, which is what I don't want.

What I would like to see is a Gantt chart based on the data that
imported.

Can someone help me?

Thanks!

Marvin,
I must be missing something. I don't see a duration value listed in your
..csv file data. So how is Project to "know" what the duration of the
task is supposed to be?

Furthermore, I'm wondering why you even need to use Project. It appears
your Excel data is a "done deal". You apparently already know the
percent complete and the finish date for each task.

We can probably help you, but we need a more complete picture before we
can do that.

My mistake,

There is a duration value in the .csv file, it is a value that
represents the tasks in hours.

I'm pulling this data from a product called TeamTrack by a company
called Serena. It is how we manage our issues/task.

Management likes to see things in pretty pictures, so I felt that
pushing the data into Project and producing a Gantt chart would be the
easiest way since I'm not an excel expert. This will allow the
management team to see how their resources are allocated and what they
are allocated to work on, among other things that Project can provide.

Here is my issue;

I'm importing my data, the first task/row has finish date of 06/10/200
and it is 10% complete with 8 hours of duration;
Once the data is inside of Project the finish date is 06/08/07 and I'
not sure where this coming from and why it is changing

Hello Marvin,

I imagine Project has assigned a finish date of June 8, 2007 because
June 10 is a Sunday. Duration to Project is always in working days.
So a four day task that begins on Wednesday will show a finish date
of Monday pm -- 4 working days later.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Marvin,
It looks like Julie picked this up while I was off-line. I assume she
answered your question.
