Importing from Excel with TransferSpreadsheet - 255 character limi

There seems to be a limitation when using the Transferspreadsheet method in
Access VBA to import an excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet I am importing
has fields with data greater than 255 bytes in length. However the data gets
truncated at 255 characters after the import. I notice when manually
importing the spreadsheet using the Get External Data feature, this issue
doesn't exist.

Note: I am using Access 2000 and am importing from an Excel 2000 spreadsheet.

Would anyone know of a solution or at least an automated work-around?
