importing into MS project 2007 standard

Hello,
I have a legacy task system that allows users to enter work items
(i.e. tasks), the project, they are assigned to, who is working on
them, updated status, due date, etc.. I have been asked to add GANNT
charting to this application using MS Project (the new project manager
is VERY familiar with and attached to MS Project). To that end, I
would like to export the tasks from the database in the current task
system and import them into MS project so that they can be displayed
using it's GANNT chart capabilities.
I've googled around a little, and I see posts on how to export
from Excel and Outlook, but I didn't see a generic format for
exporting to MS Project. I'm just wondering if it's possible, and if
so, what is the format?

Thanks,
Dave
