Importing Multimedia Files

Dr. Phyto

I tried to import multimedia files into FP2000, but get a vague message:
"An error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files. Authors - if
authoring against a web server, please contact the webmaster for this
server's site. WebMasters - please see the server's system log for more
details."

The microsoft kb has the error message, but their example doesn't cover my
situation. There article:

Anyway, so I used windows explorer and made a folder in my disk based web,
put the multimedia files into it, then recalculated hyperlinks. frontpage
then noticed the files, and so I built links to the files. Problem is, now
the disk based web won't publish up to the server. I get "the server timed
out" after a couple minutes. My server "Accuwebhosting.com" says they can
publish a test page just fine, and so, I am left without a way to proceed. I
am stuck. Can someone please help?

If your host supports subwebs -
If the folder containing your files only contains multinedia files,
convert it to a subweb (right-click->Convert to web).
Open your online site and do the same thing - create the folder and
convert to web.
Then use an FTP client to upload the mulimedia files. Only upload the
files themselves, do not upload any folders, and do not touch any
folders with names beginning with _vti_.

Never open this subweb in FrontPage (using FTP may break the
extensions in the subweb, but the main web will be OK), and never use
FrontPage to publish it.
If you only upload files, you will be able to use FP hyperlink
dialogue to create links to the files on your pages in the local web.

JDR, they are 2 to 4 meg. I had done a test with small picture files, and yes
they did import fine. Why isn't FP able to handle 2 to 4 meg., and why would
the server be timing out?

Dear Ronx;

Thanks for the suggestion, but it adds a complexity to maintanance (for
instance, I have other sub-webs, so I couldn't ever tell fp to "publish
sub-webs" by this solution. I would like to find out why this is happening,
and also, if a later version of fp than 2000 has solved the problem.
