Importing phone #'s from Excel

I am importing contacts from excel but am stumped on one
problem....the phone numbers are changed after being
imported.

The excel file has 10 digit Canadian numbers but the
Outlook contact has a 9 digit number that isn't remotely
related. I've tried importing as special, number, and
text format.
