Importing Photos, Excel Tables, Graphs, etc into MS Word (for Mac or PC)

I have difficulty managing my imported visuals, tables, graphs, photos
etc. into MS Word. Normally, I copy and paste into MS Word but I have
trouble with placement. For example, an inserted picture or graph
(from excel) with bounce to the top of the page and I can't seem to
drag it where I want it. Also, the formating seems to get messed up.
For example, cells become extended or run clear off the page. I am
currently working on my graduate thesis and need to import many
pictures, graphs, and tables and am hoping someone can tell me what I
am doing wrong. What is the easiest way to import a file into MS Word
with the proper placement. Thank you - John

Hi Johnny -

Before you go any further with your thesis you have a bit of homework to do
if you intend to use Word (PC or Mac), keeping in mind that anything other
than text is considered by Word to be a foreign body invading its system :)

Start by having a good long read here:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/DrawingGraphics.htm

And you might benefit from the insights offered by Clive in his masterwork:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html

You'll also do well to follow some of the links to be found on the Word MVP
web site in order to help insure that the doc stays healthy:

http://word.mvps.org/index.html

If you have any specific issues to resolve along the way don't hesitate to
post here, but include as much specific info as you can including OS version
& Word version as well as descriptive detail of the problem.

Hi Johny,
Keeping pictures where you want is sometimes hard in word, but I have
this methods which works fime for me.
What I usually do if it's just few graphics - I set *text wrapping* as
*inline with text* manually.
If I have document such as you do, I usually make a template with style
for body text and heading and make a special paragraph style for
pictures such as:

paragraph style: body
space before:
space after:
alighn: centre
....)
This will save you a lot of time when reformating. You can prepare
special style for picture naming and explanation and then place it after
picture paragraph and it will stay there...

Thanks to both Bob and "little creature" for your replies - I will do
some reading and try little creatures advice! Best wishes - John

Johny,
I did my literature survey in this way - worked on both PC and Mac and
worked fine. The only thing to be careful is the font, which will
behave slightly different on PC and MAC and therefore the page layout
can slightly differ even using the same font.
Just want to add that if you make a special paragraph style for your
picture make sure spacing isn't set to exactly, otherwise you will see
only 1 row from your picture, but it can be easy repaired by setting
the paragraph spacing to something different.
If you have any trouble let us know

The biggest problem with fonts of the same type is using caution in the
sizes. because Mac's use 72 dpi (8x9 pixel pattern to draw a character
within) and PC typically use 96dpi (8x12) the font 10pt created on a Mac
and shown on a PC will be 72/96 as large on The PC and On the PC will
show (appear) 96/72 as large on Mac.

Hi Phillip:

When did Macs revert to 72 dpi?

I thought they had been 96 dpi since OS 9?

Cheers

Actually there are "some" applications such as web browsers and such
that optionally allow you to use 96 dpi (I've tried it in FireFox,
SeaMonkey and such. Never saw that had much affect.

As for word Documents because I maintain a website for an Association I
belong to I must deal with documents sent from Word PC and if there is a
pdf sent along when I open the document in Word2004 Mac there is much
pagination going on. I have to fiddle with the fonts to get it to show
the same on the screen.

Why do they send both? often They haven't spell or Grammar checked
before hand so I have to do that then create a corrected copy and create
a new PDF.

Up until very recently (last two or three years) LCD screens were
available for Mac's and the graphics cards were set with the old system.
I got my LCD screen and The DVI Graphics card long after my loading on
Wood 2004.

I expect with the Intel systems thats 96 would be default.

Even when you buy adobe fonts today you get them either for Mac or PC.
