Importing Primavera Into MS Project

Deb T.

I have been asked if it is easy or straight-forward to import selected
project milestones/tasks into MS Project from Primavera. My first gut
response is why import, just retype them into Project. However the requestor
is HQ/NNSA and they are developing an overview MS Project Gantt chart for a
program that has deliverables from across many different NNSA projects. They
are trying to determine the best best method for keeping track of certain
deliverables without having to maintain a giant master schedule - in order to
assess the status of the sum of those deliverables. Does anyone have any
experience with doing this?

No I don't have any such experience, but I can offer some
possibilities based n experience transferring data between Project and
other scheduling software.

There may well be a common file format through which data can be
exchanged, like .mpx or others. You might be able to save your P3 data
to SureTrak, and thence to Project, since I know they used to have a
shared transferrable file format.

And finally, worst case, would be some kind of ODBC transfer, which
would probably be more complex, time consuming, and expensive.

BTW, what is NNSA? We aren't all in the same industry here.

Oh my, I'm sorry. NNSA is the National Nuclear Security Administration. Its a
government agency at a level similar to the DOE (Dept of Energy), except its
focus is maintaining and protecting the US nuclear weapons stockpile. The
question was asked of me from headquarters (HQ) in Washington, so I didn't
want to give a knee jerk reaction.

I have imported and exported to Primavera and it works well. No really
issues. The real issue is why not simply use primavera were the data comes
from to show how the updates will or have effected the milestones that you
are watching. You can always filter primavera to only show the milestones
and get an automatic update without guessing at the dates or links

Ron,
Thanks for your thoughts. I agree with you about just using Primavera.
However a number of schedules are in MSP and a few are in Primavera, so no
doubt that is the "why" behind the request.

Can you provide me with more details on how to accomplish this. I have
transferred MSP schedules into SureTrak, and I wouldn't say it was
staight-forward, but it was successful. This was about 5 years ago, so
hopefully things have progressed since then. What type of file do you save
the Primavera file as to tranfer into MSP?

Within Primavera is a export feature to either MS Project or other formats.
You simply open the project and export to MPP file format. Coding that was
used in Primavera doesn't come across but all summary tasks do.

Thank you Ron. I will give this a try. What Primavera product/s and version/s
does this work with?

Hi Deb, having look at this thread. Am interested to know whether you are successful @ this. And if you are could you pls guide me the process you have adopted.

Thanks,
