Importing project plans to Server

D

Deborah R

As the administrator, is it possible for me to import project plans into
project Server from my own PC, and then change the project manager or some
other setting so that the appropriate pm will have the plan there for them
when they log on using their own user account in project? In other words I
usually walk each individual PM through importaing their projects at their
own pc's but am running into some instances where I need to get plans on
Server and the PMs are not around for me to do the work at their PC . ANy
advice on this would be very much appreciated! THANK YOU!

Easy! You already know how to import a project. Do the same thing on your
PC. Publish and close the plan. Go to PWA > Project Center. Choose a view
that displays the project. Click somewhere on the row for thta project (but
not on the project name hyperlink or on an indicator icon). Then click the
Edit button at the top of the table. You'll see a drop-down box where you
can change the Owner. Make the change and Save. Tell the new owner to open
the project and Collaborate > Publish > Republish Assignments. Have her
republish all assignments and check the box to become the manager of these
assignments. She may want to uncheck the e-mail notification box.

Once you see how this works, it'll take you less time to do than it took me
to write this note.

Reid, thank you so much for the step by step process! Makes sense, however
when I go to change the owner, there are only about 10 out of the 300
resources in our ERP in that owner drop down list. This particular PM that I
need to assign as the owner is listed as a Project manager by group and
category so I am wondering i f you can tell me what drives the owner list
since I wasn' ta part of setting this up? Thank You!!

It *could* be that YOUR category permissions are preventing you from seeing
that particular PM.

Drop-down lists such as this one can be influenced by the RBS. I've worked
out the rules (I think!) for some of them, but not for this particular one.

RBS could be a consideration but if you are an administrator than you
are not bound by the RBS or at least you shouldn't be out of the box.

The list of Project Managers in the Owner drop down list is controlled
by the "New Project" global permission which is usually set at the
group level. Make sure then that all the project managers you want to
be in the owner dropdown list, be give the "New Project" permission
through a security group like "Project Managers" for example.

Thank you for the info. I have checked and confirmed that "New Project" is
set as an allowed permission in our "project manager" security template which
was applied to the Project Manager group he is a part of. Still he does not
show up in the owner list and I have tried everything I can think of but am
still unable to determine exactly what contolls this list. I was hoping it
was the global permissions at the group level but those permissions for his
group are set correctly? Any ideas? THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Verify that this security permission is not set to "Deny" anywhere else that
this user might be associated to. Go to the specific user and see what
other groups he is associated to if any. You must check if someone
accidentally set category or global permissions at his user level. You can
verify by expanding those to sections at the bottom of his user page.

Let me know if you find that he is Denied somewhere this "New Project"
permission.

Thank You Thank You!! Bingo! That was the problem - he assigned to another
group in addition to the project manager group and once I removed him from
that group (which is denied "new project") he showed up in the list. Thanks
again and sorry for dragging this one out so much - it seems so obvious to me
now! :)
