Importing Resources From Excel to Tasks in Project 2003

I am trying to Import a set of Resources with Estimated Hours(Work) per Resource per Task from an Excel spreadsheet and match these resources with their respective Tasks in Project 2003. I am not having much success. I have tried merging the resources to the task lists but only one resource is assigned to the task even if there are multiple resources per task. Does anyone know how to overcome this?

Basically i have a spreadsheet with the following;

Task No.1 Resource1 8hrs
Task No.1 Resource2 4hrs
Task No.1 Resource3 2hrs
Task No.2 Resource1 2hrs
Task No.2 Resource2 2hrs and so on...

I need to match the resources and work with the respective Task numbers.

Thanks in advance.

Hi KLR

you could try either copying & pasting resource or task usage view or Jack
Dahlgren's Export hierarchy to Excel macro
(http://masamiki.com/project/macros.htm) ... all of these methods will need
slight tweaking to achieve the total outcome you want but not much work at
all.

Hi JulieD,

I've tried the copy and paste in the Resource or Task Usage View with no luck. I can't see how the paste will provide the link required between the task and the respective resources assigned to that task in these views. Am i missing a part of the procedure?

Using this example please outline the procedure you would use to paste this data in?
Task Name ResourceName Work

Hi KLR

okay i've got a small test project ...
open project, go to task usage view
select the task name & work columns
copy
open excel
select cell A1, paste
insert a column between A & B
drag the resources from column A to column B
fill down the task name
delete unneeded rows
total time 5 mins for 35 tasks

if its a big project it could be annoying doing it this way and then i'ld
use the macro from Jack.
which requires only the filling down of the task name and deletion of
unneeded rows - oh and another column to convert from days to hours.

Cheers

Hi JulieD,

I see where the confusion is. What I am trying to do is "Import" the data into MS Project 2003 from Excel. Not extract the data from MS Project to Excel.

I have somewhere in the order of 600-800 Tasks, complete with resources from a CMM System to bring across into MS Project 2003 for scheduling. I can easily put the data into Excel but i'm having trouble with the import to MS Project 2003.

Do you know a way that i can easily Import the data into MS Project 2003?

Hi KLR

SORRY - (hangs head - feeling very red faced)

and it was as clear as anything in your original post .. will see what i can
come up with.

Hopefully others are still reading this thread and might have an idea - or
my responding might have stuffed up this thread so you might like to post
again.

1000 apologies.

JulieD
