Importing styles not updating document

I have a Word document given to me by someone else. It has its own set of styles. When I import my styles from Normal. dot the paragraphs do not update to my font. They remain unchanged. However, the Normal style displayed in the ribbon is correct. What gives?

That may be because whoever formatted the document over-rode whatever Styles they used with direct formatting.
