Importing updated databases

I have a data base that I have split, lets call it DataFront.mdb and
DataBack.mdb I have taken a copy and made some modifications to tables,
forms, queries and reports. The new database is called say DataFront2.mdb
and DataBack2.mdb. The users have continued to add data to the original
database while I was making amendments to the copy. I now need to update my
original database. I have tried exporting from Version 2 into Version 1. I
exported the tables with the Definition only box ticked but they overwrote
the originals and did not contain any data. If I tried importing into V1
from V2 then all the tables etc are duplicated with a number 1 after the
name and I would have to delete all the old ones and rename the new ones,
but that would delete the data in the tables.

How can I update the original database with my changes and retain all the
data?
I am using Access 2000
