importing yahoo mail messages (2,000+) freezes my outlook

I finally decided to add my yahoo mail to the previous email account that
Outlook draws from. There are over 2,000 messages in my Yahoo account, and
when I click send/receive on Outlook, the Outlook application freezes up
after a few hundred messages have been received. What should I do?
