Can someone give me a simple instruction in how to import 1600 contacts, 7 fields only, from excel into outlook. Am using 2000

From Excel - you have two options

#1 - Create a named range for the data you want to import - if you're not
familiar with "named ranges" then.....
#2 - Export the worksheet to CSV format and use that as your input source

In Outlook - use the Import Wizard - follow the screens
- When you get to the screen that has the title - "Import a file" - make
sure you check the box and the "Map Custom Fields" will activate - map each
of your seven fields to the appropriate Outlook field, import the file and
you're done.

Note: Microsoft's term "Map Custom fields" does not include the ability to
map to any user-defined fields should you have any and you will not be able
to use a custom form if you are using one.

Thank you for your help,
I did as you said and created a .csv file and imported. All the records transferred but I cannot view them in their folde
If I do an advanced find I can find the contact, it tells me which folder it is in but when I go to that folder it is empty.
Any tips

Is the contact in the folder you actually imported the contacts into? Do you
have multiple PST files (or info stores if Exchange) with duplicate folder
names by any chance?
