Improper closing of .pst files

I'm using Outlook 2003 and having occasional problems where on startup I get
a message that one of my .pst files was not closed propery and Outlook is
checking it for damage. One time I had to run scanpst.exe to fix that. Just
now I started Outlook and I got the message, "Can't open this item. Another
application closed unexpectedly while using your Personal Folders file
'C:\Documents and Settings\[my name]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Microsoft\Outlook\Personal Folders.pst'. To prevent
potential damage to your Personal Folders file, it will not be available
until you close all applications currently using it." I suspect that these
problems are related. How can I find out what the program is causing this
problem. No application (other than Outlook) is running that I would have
reason to believe is using my .pst folder and I don't recall installing any
new software in a time frame the would be associated with this problem.

Thanks.

Is the .pst file on a different host than where you run Outlook?

Do you have any desktop search applications?
