In a fillable form, how to get a checkmark in a box instead of X

I am trying to use form fields for a survey document. When the document is
protected for the user to complete, clicking in the fillable box results in
an "X" in the box. I would like to get a checkmark in the box(es) so as the
user completes the survey, a series of checkmarks show up instead of the box
with an X.
