in blank doc mode every keystroke procuces a mini diamond pattern

in blank document mode, each new keystroke, instead of creating the
corresponding character shown on the keyboard, creats a mini diamond pattern.
this does not affect the ability to modify document names or type this
question in this very help section, but does render the new doc section
impossible to use. my best guess is that a family member may have used the
keyboard and accidentally misstroked the mode into some unfamiliar place with
no way out. Help!

Version of Word?

Have you checked what FONT name is displayed for these odd-looking symbols? If
it's not something like Arial or Times New Roman try selecting the text and
changing to one of these.
