In FP2002 Under WinXP Pro SP2, How Can I crearte Sub Webas?

A

AA Smith

I'm not sure if this is exactly what I want to do or not. I have an
existing web site, basically 1 web that I maintain & publish with FP2002. I
would like to create either a second web (or sub web) that would not be
accessible from any point in my existing web site. I am not having any luck
finding out exactly how to create sub webs. So, I'd very much appreciate
the benefit of your thoughts and suggestions on this.

Create a folder in the current web, right click and select convert to web / site.

Thanks, Thomas!

I sincerely appreciate your help.. Now that I've created the sub-web that
way, I need to move certain web pages (though not all of them) from the
pre-existing web to the newly-created sub-web. Would doing so mess up those
pages when they're moved?

Hello, again, Thomas;

Another question comes to mind...

Now that I've created a sub-web, how do I give viewers access to the sub web
only? That is, how do I setup a link for them to go directly to the
Index.htm of the sub-web without accessing any of the primary web?

As an example: the current pre-existing web is accessed by a link that's
formatted like:

http://www.comcast.net/~UserName

Do I have to let them view the pre-existing web before navigating to the
sub-web? Or is there some way a link could take viewers directly to the sub
web?

S

Stefan B Rusynko

If you open you root web in FP & IE as http://www.comcast.net/~UserName/
And you have a subweb in it named say: private
Then you view the subweb in IE as http://www.comcast.net/~UserName/private/

Open both your root web and subweb in FP
In Folder List, select you files & use
- Edit Copy in the root and Edit Paste in the Subweb
Or the easiest way is to Publish your root web to the subweb,
- then delete the undesired content from your subweb

Thank you very much Stefan!

I appreciate your help. I tried setting up a sub web with its own
INDEX.HTM (in addition to the INDEX.HTM in the parent or high-level web.)
That didn't work liker I thought it might. Evidently the sub-web cannot
have its own INDEX.HTM because one INDEX.htm always seemed to cancel out the
other.

I also tried using DEFAULT.htm as the default entry point for the sub-web.
That didn't work either. At least, I don't think so.

The real problem may be the way I try to access the sub web. When I try to
use http://www.comcast.net/~UserName/private/ Comcast returns a URL not
found error. When I try to use http://www.comcast.net/~UserName/subwebname/
Comcast also returns a URL not found error.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong. However, I have not figured out how to
get the high-level and sub-web to work right. What am I doing wrong? And
how can I get it to work properly?

A

AA Smith

Thanks, Stefan!

Publishing my root web to the sub web then removing unwanted content in both
root & sub webs is exactly what I need to do. The question is, how would I
go about publishing my root web to the sub-web?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

You can have a "index.htm" in any folder or subweb.

Open the root web and then publish (make sure include subweb/site is NOT selected)...

If you root web is currently a subweb under localhost, you would use the following as the publishing
path:

http://localhost/rootwebname/subwebname

If you root web is currently localhost, you would use the following as the publishing path:

http://localhost/subwebname

Hello, again, Thomas;

Ok, in order to copy my existing web pages in the root web to the sub-web,
I've published the root web to the sub-web on my hard drive. Then, I
published my root web to https://home.comcast.net/~username. I did not
check Include subwebs when I published to Comcast.

When I access the root web, no problem. However, I cannot access the subweb
by either using

http://home.comcast.net/~username/private (as I believe Stefan suggested) or
by using

http://home.comcast.net/~username/sub-web

Do I need to check the Include subwebs box when I publish to
https://home.comcast.net/~username ?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Try publishing to https://home.comcast.net/~username make sure that you have include subwebs /
subsites enabled.

If this doesn't work, then you host may not allow you to create subwebs / subsites or they may have
to create the subweb / subsite for you first.

HI, Thomas;

I decided to try publishing my root web to https//home.comcast.net/~username
with the "Include subwebs" box checked. That didn't work. I got a
FrontPage error message stating, "The server could not complete your
request....." I clicked the Details button and got "Server Error This
server has encountered an internal error which prevents it from fulfilling
your request. The most likely cause is a misconfiguration. Please ask the
administrator to look for messages in the server's error log."

The log read:

Sunday, July 03, 2005 10:09:15 AM Publishing from "\\Rms2\AA Network
Transfer Folder\AA Dicks Web Site\AA Dicks Personal Web Site" to
"https://home.comcast.net/~smithrms".

"aboutme.htm".
Sunday, July 03, 2005 10:09:32 AM Copied "aboutme.htm".
Sunday, July 03, 2005 10:09:36 AM Publishing subweb from "\\Rms2\AA

Site\sub-web" to "https://home.comcast.net/~smithrms/sub-web".

Network Transfer Folder\AA Dicks Web Site\AA Dicks Personal Web Site" to
https://home.comcast.net/~smithrms.

Obviously, I'm doing at least one thing wrong, possibly several. But, I
don't know what I need to do to get the root web and sub web to work. So, I
shall greatly appreciate your continued help on this.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Since you got an error message from the server, most likely your host doesn't allow you to create
subwebs.

How tacky of them!

Guess I'll have to dump Comcast aznd find a real ISP.

Thanks, Thomas!

There are certain features of the FP Extensions that any host can enable or disable. So when looking
for a web host, you need to make sure they full support the FP extensions for your platform choice
(Windows or Unix/Linux)

Good grief! I can't get a straight answer out of Comcast's tech support
folks on this question. Apparently, there's no one on duty this weekend
that knows anything about FP extensions.

All I get back from them is mindless replies like:

"Unfortunately, you have requested assistance for a feature Comcast does not
support. Our Customer Care Specialists are only trained and authorized to
offer limited help with items installed by our technicians. Therefore, we
must direct you to the manufacturer of your product. Some examples of
unsupported areas are:
-- Third-party Hardware (routers, phone devices, hubs, splitters, gaming
equipment)

-- Custom CGI Scripting

-- Windows NT Servers

-- Instant Messaging software like AIM or MSN Messenger,

Yata, yata, yata.,,,"

This is most frustrating.

I'm not complaining about the kind help you and Stefan have shared with me,
just sharing the kind of garbage that comes from my ISP's so called "tech
support" folks.
