In general: where can I learn about MS Project and or server and s

Fatima

I just started this job and my boss wants me to be the project expert.
Well I have never used it or anything and would like some resources to learn
how to use this tool and be ok before I loose my job.

He is asking me way too many things that he wants and I do not know where to
start or what to do.

The way it is used now it is just MS Project 2003 they create a project with
sub projects and their tasks put % complete against it by contacting the
people responsible for task and post a print out in conference room.

How can it be better than this having people update their % complete on
their own and updates sent out.

Dale if you are there please help

You have our sympathies but learning Microsoft Project Server is not
something one can do overnight or by way of a newsgroup!

I'd suggest you start by reading Implementing Enterprise Portfolio
Management with Microsoft Project Server 2002 by Gary Chefetz. I realize this
book talks to the 2002 version but it provides an excellent overview of MPS
so you will understand the components and how they interact, the security and
permissions model and all points in between. Gary and Dale Howard authored
two later books entitled Administering an Enterprise PMO and Managing
Enterprise Projects, both using Microsoft Office Project Server 2003. I think
that reading the 2002 book first will provide more of an appreciation of the
newer books.

Good luck.

You can click either URL in my signature block to purchase our books on
Project Server 2003. To gain proficiency as the Project Server
administrator, you should also consider taking one of our online Project
Server classes aimed specifically at administrators. If we can help you
beyond that, such as training your project managers and team members, please
feel free to contact us.

To answer your question, the default method of tracking in Project Server
2003 is % Work Complete, which should work with your organization's current
process for tracking projects. We do recommend, however, that you add the
Actual Start and Actual Finish fields to each user's timesheet in PWA so
that your tracking method can be date sensitive to late starts and late
finishes. Refer to the following FAQ for how to add these fields:

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Shared Documents/changetimesheet.htm

As an aside, I think your boss's expectations are totally unrealistic.
Project Server is not a tool that someone can master overnight, let alone
become an expert. If you read and study our books carefully, and follow
what we recommend, you can become proficient with the tool and be valuable
to your company. Also, continue to participate regularly in this forum, as
you will learn much from the questions and answers given here. Good luck!
