in header/footer there is nothing in drop down box for autotext

When going into header/footer in order to insert page x of y, when I click
the insert autoText button, there is nothing, just a 1/4" blue box drops
down. How can I reset or reinstall the autoText?

You have probably overwritten your normal.dot file (not a good thing to do).
