In mail merge, can you use data file from v2000 in v2002?

I am trying to use my data file from Word 2000 in Word2002. In order to open
the file, Word keeps asking me to "identify the field and record delimiters".
This was not asked of me in the past. When I open my data file (a .doc
document) it looks like a table. Can anyone suggest what delimiters to use,
or how I can use this file to run a mail merge without starting from scratch?
