In MS Office XP if I set the save files in word 97 - 2003 format

In MS Office XP if I set the save files in word 97 - 2003 format it is
getting reset to *.docx

Office XP does not have a Word 97-2003 format save option (it does have a
Word 97-2003 RTF format option).
The default save option is Word Document (*.doc) format.
It will only save in Word 2007 docx format by virtue of a converter added if
you install the Word 2007 compatibility pack.
So what *exactly* are you doing and what are you trying to achieve?
