In MS Word 2004 for the Mac, how do I turn off automatic footers?

I know how to turn the automatic footer off for each individual
document, but I was wondering if there is any way to shut it off on the
default (or do I just do this in the "Normal.doc" template?).

AFAIK, Word does not use "automatic" headers or footers. If your new
docs are supplied with content in either, then your Normal template has
been modified or a different template is being used. (There are a few
other, but unlikely, possibilities.) So, yes, the appropriate template
is where the change would have to be made.

Ahh. I just saw this after posting. I thought by "automatic" Ivy meant the
space that's automatically reserved for the footer. But you're right: Her
documents may be based on a custom template, not Normal.

I'm very sorry - I realize I should have been much more specific with
my question but I had a hard time finding it and am crazy busy at work
at the moment. The problem I'm having is under Footers (you have to
have headers and footers active so that their menu bar will show up)
under AutoText the "Author, Page #, Date" option defaults to be
selected and I can't find a way to turn it off. It is NOT checked in
the normal.doc file either, so I don't understand what's happening.

You need to open up Normal and delete the actual text, I suspect. It's in
username/documents/MS User Data/Normal, unless you moved it.

thanks. There is no text (at all - in the body of the doc OR in the
footer) in the normal.dot file. I am a mac user and am suspecting this
has something to do with all of the troubles I have been having with
Word and Entourage ever since upgrading.

In that case, I would recommend doing a full Removal/Reinstall of Office
with all updates. If you're having multiple problems, perhaps something is
wrong with the installation. It's not a difficult process, just time
consuming (and you MUST run Remove Office first). Follow the steps at this
URL: <http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/RemoveReinstall.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another
browser.)

Also, since your Normal template will be preserved when you remove Office,
and since it *may* be the cause of some of your problems, I would recommend
renaming it, dragging it to your desktop and letting Word make a new one
when you next relaunch. Then, if there are customizations that you want to
keep, you can copy them over using Organizer after you do the
reinstallation. There's more about this subject here:
<http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/MacWordNormal.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another browser
for this site.)

Let us know how it goes!

Have you tried resetting the toolbar? You won't find the Header and
Footer Toolbar in the Customize dialog box, but depending on version go
to H/F and click the black arrowhead at the right end of the bar,
select Reset Toolbar. Might be worth a try before a complete
un/re-install |:>)

Yeah. Because I can't figure out how the AutoText in the Header/Footer could
come up automatically set to anything anyhow--that menu doesn't set to
stuff, it just inserts.

I

ivy13

how do you reset the toolbar? I would love to try that because I have
already done a complete removal(uninstall) and reinstallation and
really don't want have to do it a third time. Thanks!

First, View Header/Footer so that the h/f toolbar is visible on the screen.

Then Tools | Customize, Toolbars and Menus, click on Toolbars tab.
Highlight the Header and Footer entry in the dialog. Click Reset.

(Note re this dialog--the check tells you which toolbars are visible,
highlighting tells you which one the Rename/Delete/Reset command will apply
to)

Do you perhaps have any add-ins that might be changing the header/footer
toolbar?

(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

thank you! I will definitely give this a try. Now if only I could get
Entourage to stop stalling on me (ah well - nothing in life is perfect
but his will definitely suffice). Thanks again for your help!
