My problem is nearly the same as Bob T's. Some differences: I had just
completed a clean install of Win2k, made all the recommended updates
(Windows Update). Then I installed Office 2k Pro as Administrator. I also
completed all the recommended updates at Office Update, plus 2-3 Office
Tools that I use. The installations and all updates proceeded without a
hitch. The installation appears to be available to me in my normal "Power
User" profile, but I keep getting similar installation messages.
1) Error 1706: No valid installation source.
2) If I select the data1.msi file on the installation disk, I get
3) The Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation.
4) I click "OK" and the installer shows a progress bar followed by another
installation error message.
5) If I continue to click "OK", The process repeats over & over.
6) Eventually, the program opens and appears to work normally.
Take Outlook as an example.
1) I either click the program shortcut or connect my PPC (The results are
the same either way.)
a. First installer error (1706); click "OK".
b. Repeat a.
c. Second installer error; click "OK".
d. Outlook window opens (blank).
e. Installer error: repeat as above 3-4 times.
f. Outlook window contents appear.
g. Installer error. Repeat as above 2-4 times more.
h. Outlook is now available to use, except:
i. Using certain features start the installer error again. Varying #
of repeats depending on which feature is selected. As long as I keep
clicking 'OK', I eventually get where I'm going. Very, very frustrating.
This all takes time.
Two notes:
1) When I installed Office, I selected quite a number of features to "run on
first use". This requires the installation disk.
2) I've seen quite a number of posts in this group that reflect similar
problems, although none was as close to my situation as Bob T's. This
suggests a problem either with Office 2k or Windows, probably involving one
of the more recent updates. This because I have installed Office 2k several
times, both on Win98 and Win2k, and never encountered the problem before.

Sorry about the long post, but I figured I'd try to get in as much info as
needed the first time.
