In Outlook 2003 - "single key reading using spacebar"

In Outlook 2003, has any one else noticed that "single key reading using
spacebar" no longer marks messages as read.

In previous versions of Outlook, when this box was marked, if you used the
space bar to go through a message, the message would be marked as read.

Any pointers on how to get this back?
