In Outlook 2007, some message don't display in reading pane

In my Outlook 2007 inbox, most messages are available from the reading pane,
but not all.

Some require I mark them for download and then click on Send and Receive.
Otherwise the reading pane is blank.

Any idea on how to have all messages in inbox available through the reading
pane?
