In print layout view only a graph is in background?

Every time word starts in print layout view there is a checkered graph,
smaller than the page in the background. I can type over it but cannot
delete it. The graph will not print and does not show in Normal or web layout
view.

Display the Drawing toolbar and choose Draw | Grid. Clear the check box for
"Display gridlines on screen."
