In publisher, I can't get first line of text to center.

I created a text box, typed 5 lines of text, and selected the option to
center the text. All lines center except the first line which stays left
aligned. I highlighted the first line of text and tried clicking the right
align, left align, and center align and it remains left aligned. How can I
get the first line of text centered?
