In Registry, the Office XP product version number seems incorrect

I am using a Win2000 pro machine.
Microsoft Office XP Professional is installed.

Now, I understand that the Office XP products, i.e. Word, Excel, etc., have
version numbers that begin with 10. I understand that Office XP is the same
as Office 10 as well as Office 2002.

My question is: why do I get 7.1.3088 for the version number in the
registry:

Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\ProductVersion
Value: LastProduct = 7.1.3088

Are you encountering a specific problem? What is the version if you go
to Help/About in any Microsoft application?

FWIW I always use the version indicated under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
