In word 2003 I can't click on 'file' anymore

All of a suddon I can't click on the file menu at the top of the page. I can
click on all the others (edit, view, insert, tools, format etc) but with the
file button, the drop down menu just doesn't appear anymore.

Any ideas?

I don't have the discs because the office suite came with the computer. It
is professional edition rather than standard edition and cost a lot of money.

I have had the same problem for 3 months. Could find no answer and would like
one too. The work around I used was to create a new menu pulldown with
dublicated important commands like New, Open, Save, Print etc. But it's only
temp (I hope).

A couple of things to try:

Tools - Customize - Toolbars tab, click on Menu Bar, then click on Reset.

If that doesn't fix it, then this most certainly should:

Rename normal.dot (check Tools - Options - File Locations - User templates
to determine where it's stored -- then close Word, rename Normal.dot, and
see if the problem is fixed).

I have the same problem in Word, and I first noticed it just after the 4th of
July - the File tab drop down just stopped working but the Edit tabs and
others all appear to work. (I may have Word 2002 or 2003 - I'll have to
check). I reloaded my original instal disc and used the repair function and
the problem continues. I tried Herb's suggestions, but they didn't work
either. Any other suggestions?

I tried Herb's first suggestion again 2 more times, and it seems to have
finally worked after the last time. Strange though how my problem started
right around July 4, 2007.

Herb -

Thanks for your original tip - I guess I just needed to try it a few times
before it "stuck." I was suspicious too, but I keep both my Norton AV and
Firewall up-to-date and my computer is set to automatically scan all of my
files periodically and all new downloads/media transfers.

Again, thank you for your tips.
