In Word 2003 is there a way to tell how many records have been selected?

Example: In Word 2003, when you set up a mailmerge, you select your
database, then the recipients. Is there anyway to get the number of
recipients that have selected? The only why that I see is after the
recipients have been selected to go into edit recipients and select the last
record button. This seems a little clunky though, and causes an extra step. I
was wondering if I am missing something.

You are not missing anything - the method you suggest is probably as good as
anything. An alternative is to enable the mail merge toolbar and use the >|
button to preview the last record, but in some cases that can actually be
misleading.

You can write VBA to step through all the records in the merge without
actually merging.

For some types of data source you can use VBA and SQL to count the records,
but only if you have not selected/rejected individual records in the Mail
Merge recipients list.
