In Word 2007, need way to create Master or Parent document

I have an exercise book of about 60 exercises full of steps (no graphics). I
want to use this as a Master or Parent document and create about 8 smaller
children docs that hang off that Parent. The children docs will contain
various, but not all exercises in the Parent. This way, I can update the
Master and all the children docs are linked and will update...I can update
one Parent and all children docs update.

Building Block docs in Word are more like creating/using templates and
styles and are not what I am looking for. I see ability to create Master
docs in PowerPoint 2007, just trying to find a like function in Word 2007.

You can use the INCLUDETEXT field for that purpose. See
