Inability to Open Attachments Shown in Gray on Menu

David Horst

Frequently, or always, since I updated IE 5, and as a
result my Outlook Express 5 became OE 6.00.2800.1106, I
cannot open attachments to e-mail, which appear in gray on
the menu which appears when I click the paperclip symbol.
Is this some new feature in OE 6.00.2800.1106 which, by
default, prevents any attachments from being
opened? Is there some option unknown to me which must be
changed to prevent attachments from being blocked? Must
one have administrator status to do this? Or is the
attachment defective? I cannot tell what kind of
attachment is involved; I think it is .url. Likewise I
can't fathom any of the material or options in
the "Knowledge Base." Thanks for your help.

Hi, David.

OE6 protects us from willy-nilly opening attachments, because so many
viruses and other malwares are spread that way.

If you are SURE the attachment is safe, click Tools | Options... | Security
and UNcheck the box that says "Do not allow attachments...that could...be a
virus". You probably should go back and recheck that box after downloading
the attachment that you trust from a sender that you trust.

But I have to ask: Why did you post this particular question in this Office
Update newsgroup? Why not in the Outlook Express group?
