Inactive menus in Word, can anyone assist?

When I first open Word and click on file and say open, everthing works OK. If
I close the current document and do the same thing the menus are inactive.
I'd appreciate any advice as to a fix for this. Thanks.

There are many menu items that are not available when no document is open.
