inadvertent web page format

Whenever I now create a document in Word, it is saved in what I believe is
web page format. I do not know why. The default file format is set to Word
Document when I look at the Save tab under Tools/Options. If I do a "Save
As" the document type is shown as Word Document. Any ideas of how I got into
this state would be appreciated. Thanks.
