Inavlid Node name Parameter specified .... what does this mean????

I have two resources that were marked inactive... I now need to mark them
active again. I open the enterprise resource pool, and select the two
resources. For each of them I uncheck the inactive box and then I try to save
them back to the enterprise resource pool. I get the following message:
Project server was unable to process the request. An invalid node name
parameter was specified....
From a users perspective this is a truly meaningless error message. Any
possible enlightenment would be appreciated.
