I started using Outlook 2003 about three months ago (switched from Outlook
Express). I also use Norton Internet Security 2005 (which scans all my
incoming and outgoing POP3 email).
I have multiple POP accounts set up in Outlook, so I created a separate .pst
file for each account, and created a separate Inbox folder under each .pst
for each account. Then I set up a bunch of rules to sort all my incoming
mail into the appropriate Inbox folder based on which account it was coming
from. Everything works great.
However, sometimes an Inbox folder will simply disappear from one of the
..pst files. And it can't be found anywhere. This has happened about four
times now.
I tried running Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) and it would tell me that
there were no errors in the file. Then I followed a suggestion I found here:
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.htm
I changed the first byte from 21 to 00, and then ran Inbox Repair Tool.
Hence errors were detected, and the .pst was repaired and the missing Inbox
came back. (The size of the .pst increased about 2KB, and I'm not sure why).
Anyhow...this has happened four times and I did the 21 to 00 trick and each
time I was able to recover my Inbox (it does not always happen with the same
POP account).
Does anyone out there have any ideas / suggestions about this? I'm not sure
if there's an issue with Outlook and multiple POP accounts -- since it
downloads all the emails in parallel as opposed to one account at a time
like Outlook Express does. And I'm not sure if there's an issue with Norton
AntiVirus for the same reason (processing multiple emails in parallel
screwing something up).
So I really don't know how to avoid this -- any help would be much
appreciated.
Thanks!
