Inbox has Phantom Messages

My Inbox states that I have 4 unread messages. I cannot find them anywhere.
I have checked all the subfolders and am at my wits end. Any suggestions
where to find them, or how to clear the number?

The number is in my folder list, directly to the right of the INBOX in
brackets.
When I get a new message the number changes, and after i read it the number
goes back to 4. But i cant find those 4 anywhere.

green text like this: [4] or blue (4) ?

Green is the count - right click on the folder and choose properties -
change it to unread. if blue number (and bolded folder name), what type of
email account do you have?

Does the Unread Mail folder show them? If so, reset the view on Inbox.
Exactly how is version-dependent, so I'll let you figure it out.
