incessant and unexplicable crashing of word xp

i have been having the following error quite a bit
recently: Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience.
it's been more frequent since i loaded the most recent
office updates on 9/3/2003 (almost every single time i've
had word open in the last few days). sometimes, it
happens for no apparent reason. i'm not even typing
anything, the program is simply open. sometimes, it's
when i'm saving a current version of the document on
which i'm working. sometimes, it's while i'm entering
text. there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the
seemingly incessant crashing. (yesterday, it crashed 5!!
times. it's rather frustrating, made even more so because
i'm trying to finish my dissertation.) some of the
documents have imbedded images; some do not. i can't
think of any good reason that this should be happening.

Suzanne posted the following to someone else who is experiencing the same issue:

This is caused by a conflict with the Norton Office Plug-in. See "OFF:
Cannot Open Office Documents or Cannot Edit Inserted Objects After You
Install Office XP Service Pack 2 or Office 2000 Service Pack 3" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=328613

I have a similar problem
I have Word2002 on Office XP SP2.
I get a message saying
The "more info" button gives information referring to
msgrit32.dll. I think the cause is linked to the
multilingual installation of office (Italian, German,
French) that I have, and is caused by the italian spell
checker.
Serching MS knowledgebase for msgrit32.dll I see that MS
proposes plenty of solution but none work.

One that works is to disable spell checking in all
documents.

I have stopped using word and now use the much cheaper
staroffice.

I don't believe I posted that response to this particular type of problem
but to the problem of being unable to open Word files (or edit OLE objects)
after updating Office.
